Dao and I keep an iChat window open most days while we’re attending our daily tasks. Obviously, it’s broken up by long periods of silence from Virginia for babycare and the like, but he keeps impressing upon me the quirkiness of Wisconsin. No stranger to sports fanaticism, I know about Packers fans, and the Cheeseheads, but this story is odd.
If you look at the captions on the picture from the observation deck of the Capitol dome, you can see where the University Of Wisconsin Madison and the Memorial Library are. Evidently, there’s a rule that the University Chancellor must be able to see the capitol building from his office in Bascom Hall. In the seventies when the third and final addition to the library was being built, it became evident while the steel girders were being erected that the capitol building wouldn’t be visible anymore.
Instead of changing the rule, they halted construction and new plans were drawn up for a shorter building and compact movable shelving inside to make up for the loss of space.
I think I get the point now.
On a technical note for the webpage, the comment section on each page seems to be broken since Apple migrated to mobileme versus .mac. I’d really like them to fix it, but I have no idea how long or even when it may happen. You can always reach us by emailing Marissa.
We left Logan at 6:30 AM headed for Wisconsin
July 8 through July 14, 2008
Wisconsin Johnson’s Creek and Madison
Somewhere over Canada at 30-something thousand feet.
Nothing’s on the wing.
Milwaukee Brewer’s Miller Park was on the way, since we started at Fenway, perhaps this will be a trend. With any luck, the Chicago contingent will take Fairfax to the confines of Wrigley Field.
Visiting Daofarm was a lot more relaxing than running around Boston
Climbing apple trees is fun!
Relaxing on the deck Sunday evening...
When Dao left the farm for Boston the robin’s nest on the bedroom window ledge had 3 eggs, one of which had just hatched. When we got back it was the last day before the birds left the nest. We got to see a feeding by mom and dad.
Having a discussion, sitting on the fence(post)
Thought Fairfax would add some “cute factor” to help sell the Daofarm
Sunrise on departure day!
Another sunrise pic...
Waiting for Thyme… didn’t replant the herb garden this year.
With any luck, it’ll do better than the tomatoes in Annandale. Marissa’s Dad has a hard time with nature.
Dao hadn’t gotten a chance to shoot his longbow for 2 weeks while in Boston, so we took a drive to Buckrub Archery the day we got back.
Here is Daohead shooting his longbow. I just watched.
Hannah keeps order on Lohnny and Lisa’s farm. She doesn’t mess around, she is all business.
Lohnny and Lisa raise bulls. 5 new calves every year. Mr. One-Horn is the friendliest of the the 2-year olds.
No bunnies were tasted in the taking of this picture.
Ultimate Cheese - Just a fun pic with my new cheesehead hat (that I mailed to Marissa) in front of one of Dao’s Elvis on Velvet paintings.
Lettuce the Fox was in storage and is happy to be in the living room again. Lettuce was rescued from the side of the road on trash day near the Daofarm. Lettuce’s name was inspired by the (obvious pun) of the Foxy Vegetable Company
We snuck into the WI State Assembly chamber...
The WI State Capitol is modeled after the US Capitol… and it actually has the highest dome of any building in the US.
Looking up into the Capitol dome from the rotunda..
This is one of Daohead’s favorite Wisconsin statues. “Forward” is the motto of the State of WI… He had to ask the construction workers to let us take this picture as this corner of the capitol entrance is under re-construction.
The plaque explaining what “Forward” is...
A copy of the original Liberty Bell located in Philadelphia… apparently, there are copies in almost all the states.
Like my new hat?
Monona Terrace was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright- a native son of Wisconsin. This pic is taken from the observation deck of the Capitol Dome.
Always attracting attention…
And then we snuck into the WI State Senate chamber.
We also snuck into the WI Supreme Court chamber...
Observation deck of the Capitol Dome looking down State Street toward University of Wisconsin.
More on this in the wall of text below!
Looking up while on the observation deck of the Capitol Dome.
The Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial. Daohead’s a vet. So’s Marissa’s Dad.
Leaving Farmington, Wisconsin for the next stop- Chicago, Illinois.
